Social media marketing for Saudi brands: a practical monthly retainer plan

A practical monthly social media retainer plan for Saudi brands: platforms, content pillars, Arabic copy, production, community, paid boosts, reporting.

For many brands in Saudi Arabia, social media is not a side channel. It is where customers discover new places, compare products, ask questions and decide what to buy. Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok and X each have large audiences in the Kingdom, and LinkedIn matters for B2B. That makes social media marketing in Saudi Arabia both a big opportunity and an easy way to waste money on posts nobody remembers.

A monthly retainer, with an agency or an in-house team, can work well when it is planned properly. This guide sets out a practical structure for a social media retainer: what it should cover each month, how to divide the work, and how to judge whether it is working.

Decide what social media is for

Before choosing platforms or post counts, agree on the job. Most brands want one or two of these:

  • Awareness. Getting known by people who have not heard of you.
  • Consideration. Showing products, prices, locations and proof so people choose you.
  • Enquiries and sales. Driving messages, calls, bookings or online orders.
  • Community and service. Answering questions and keeping existing customers close.
  • Recruitment and reputation. Showing what it is like to work with or for you.

A restaurant opening a new branch in Riyadh and a B2B contractor in Jubail need very different plans. Write the goal down in one sentence and keep it at the top of every monthly report.

Choose fewer platforms, and do them properly

It is tempting to be everywhere. It is usually better to be excellent on two platforms than average on five. Pick based on where your customers actually spend time and what you can produce:

  • Snapchat and TikTok reward vertical video, faces, speed and a casual tone.
  • Instagram works for visual products, places and behind-the-scenes content, in both feed and short video.
  • X suits news, opinion, customer service and public conversation.
  • LinkedIn suits B2B, recruitment and company news.

Each platform needs its own format. Posting the same square image with the same caption everywhere tells audiences you are not really there.

The monthly rhythm of a retainer

A retainer works best on a predictable monthly cycle. Here is a simple structure.

Week 1: plan

  • Review last month’s report: what worked, what did not, what people asked about.
  • Agree the month’s priorities: launches, offers, events, seasonal moments.
  • Build the content calendar with post types, platforms, dates and approvals needed.

Week 2: produce

  • Shoot photo and video in batches, ideally in one or two production days.
  • Write captions in Arabic and English where both are needed.
  • Design graphics, edit video, prepare stories and short-form edits.

Weeks 2 to 4: publish and respond

  • Publish on schedule, with room for timely posts when something happens.
  • Reply to comments and messages within agreed hours.
  • Boost or advertise the best-performing posts.

End of month: report

  • Report against the goal, not just likes.
  • Recommend changes for next month.

Content pillars that keep you consistent

Content pillars are the three to five themes you return to every month. They stop the calendar becoming random. For example, a home furniture brand might use:

  1. Products in real homes. Not only studio shots.
  2. Practical tips. Small spaces, materials, care.
  3. Behind the scenes. Workshop, delivery, team.
  4. Customer stories. With permission, shared by real customers.
  5. Offers and launches. Clearly and not too often.

Each pillar should connect to the goal. If a pillar does not help awareness, consideration or sales, drop it.

Arabic first, not Arabic translated

For most Saudi audiences, Arabic content should be written as Arabic, not translated from English. That means captions that sound natural, local references where they fit, and humour that works in the language. Decide the tone of voice: formal Modern Standard Arabic, a lighter conversational tone, or Saudi dialect for some platforms. Many brands use different registers on different platforms, and that is fine if it is deliberate.

Plan for the calendar too. Ramadan, Eid, Saudi National Day, Founding Day, school terms, summer travel and big local events change what people do online. Plan these months early, because production and approvals take time.

Production: the part that makes or breaks it

The biggest difference between social accounts that grow and accounts that stall is usually the quality and quantity of original content. Stock images and reposted templates do not stop the scroll.

Batch production saves money and time. One well-planned shoot day can produce a month of photos, short videos and stories. Plan the shot list against the content calendar, and capture vertical and horizontal versions at the same time. Our guide to planning a shoot that actually gets used explains how.

Community management

Social media is a conversation. Agree in the retainer:

  • Who replies to comments and direct messages, and in which hours.
  • What the team can answer alone, and what needs your input (prices, complaints, refunds).
  • How quickly enquiries are passed to sales, and through which channel, often WhatsApp.

An unanswered message from a ready-to-buy customer is the most expensive mistake on social media.

Organic reach is limited on most platforms. A retainer should include a plan for paid promotion, even a modest one. Keep the media budget separate from the agency fee so you can see exactly what goes to the platform. Target by city, interests and behaviour, test different creative, and stop what does not work quickly.

Reporting that means something

A useful monthly report fits on two pages and answers:

  • What did we do this month?
  • What happened against the goal (enquiries, sales, bookings, reach in the right audience)?
  • Which posts worked best, and why do we think so?
  • What will we change next month?

Followers and likes are signals, not goals. Ask to see where enquiries came from and how many turned into customers.

What to agree before you sign a retainer

  • The goal and how it will be measured.
  • Platforms, post types and a realistic monthly volume.
  • Production days included per month.
  • Languages and who reviews Arabic copy.
  • Community management hours.
  • Media budget, managed separately.
  • Approval process and turnaround times.
  • Reporting format and a monthly review meeting.
  • Notice period and ownership of content, files and accounts.

Always keep ownership of your social media accounts and ad accounts in your company’s name, with the agency added as a partner or user.

Questions

How many posts a month does a Saudi brand need?

There is no correct number. Consistency and quality matter more than volume. Start with a number your team and agency can sustain every week, with time to reply to comments, then adjust based on what your reporting shows.

Should a retainer include paid advertising?

It should at least include a plan for it. Organic reach on most platforms is limited, so many brands boost their best posts or run campaigns. Keep the ad budget itself separate from the agency fee so you can see both clearly.

How long before a social media retainer shows results?

Give it at least a few months before judging, and agree from the start what results mean for you, whether enquiries, store visits, sales or reach in a new audience. Early months are often about finding the content that works.
